We have discussed modifications and a general review here and here previously, but like everything here at RideApart, we wanted to make it even better. The Ténéré is a really good motorcycle in factory form. Sending it in to ECUnleashed can take a week or more, depending on how far away from California you live. ![]() At most, the work will take a couple of hours. If you have a tuning center close by this is quicker as they can get the map prebuilt and sent to them. You can take it to an authorized tuning center and they can do all the work, or you can take the ECU out and send it to ECUnleashed and have it programmed. There are a couple ways to have this service performed. They program everything from motorcycles to super cars and came highly recommend on the Super Ténéré forums. We decided to use a trusted brand and company called ECUnleashed. In most cases, you'll have no warranty and done improperly this can really damage your motor. ![]() We found out right away that the credentials of those who are offering to do ECU mods can swing wildly there are people who purchased an ECU programmer and do this as a hobby. In researching this for the 2014 Yamaha Ténéré project, we found that costs ranged from $200 to almost $500 for the work we wanted. CostĪ typical reprogramming or "reflash" of your ECU can vary pretty wildly in price. It enables you to take a lackluster motorcycle with twitchy throttle control and turn it into that smooth powerful road monster you expected. Tweaking your ECU means removing things like low RPM power restrictions, closed loop fuel maps, error codes when changing parts, and a slew of other options. However with any engine work you do you would need to send your ECU in for a reflash. If you changed your gearing or if you only changed the slip-on portion of the exhaust you will not need a re-map. We have found although a fuel map may be 0 across all tables, the piggyback may still adds/remove fuel in certain areas in unaltered form. We highly recommend comparing AFR before and after a piggyback addition. The piggyback system can then be used to make additional changes to fueling, or add accessories like data loggers, quickshifters, map switches and more. We recommend to keep the ignition tables at 0 when pairing the two which will allow you to utilize our refined ignition timing in the flash. I ALREADY HAVE A POWER COMMANDER / BAZZAZ, SHOULD I GET RID OF IT FOR THE FLASH? The only thing you need to do is run premium (91+ Octane) fuel and adhere to your standard service intervals. Not at all! We tune each motorcycle to be as powerful as can be while keeping the bike on a safe yet conservative tune. IS ECU FLASHING GOING TO MAKE MY MOTORCYCLE UNRELIABLE? Often times even a stock motorcycle runs very lean and can be improved with proper fuel and ignition changes. All bikes vary in the end result as some bikes have more restrictions than others. WILL IT IMPROVE A COMPLETELY STOCK MOTORCYCLE?Ībsolutely. We have recommendations for everything in-between. From a completely stock bike for daily street use, to a purpose built race bike that’s only used on weekends. Using both our Dynojet Motorcycle dyno and data gathered from the race track, we can offer insight on the settings that best fit your riding style. This is due to strict EPA laws in which limit the manufactures to a specific noise level, fuel efficiency, speed limiter, and even limiting horsepower in some countries. While changing these parameters we can improve performance, reliability, and often times unlock any restrictions set by the ECU.
